James How, who founded the company in the 1950s, created a new type of winding machine so that all strings are produced with the same degree of accuracy. This is done by the winding wire stopping near the end of the ball so that a portion of its core string exposed and only the string in contact with the bridge. These strings are called 'Country Gold'.
